The destruction of the Basque town of Guernica on 26 April 1937 took place by an air attack by German fighter planes - against the current International humanitarian law. The city was not fortified, there was no air defense and no bunkers, it was a targeted attack on the civilian population. Germany had sided with the fascists in the Spanish Civil War defeated under Franco. Today, it is estimated that around 300 people died. 80% of the city was destroyed. The attack was condemned worldwide, but only Pablo Picasso made it through his 3.51m x 7.82m monumental painting, the terror of war forever to merge with the name of the Spanish city.
