The internationally successful anime series One Piece has been around since 1997. The One Piece manga series was created by mangaka Eiichiro Oda. The story follows the Straw Hat Pirates, led by the pirate Monkey D. Luffy, as they search for the legendary treasure One Piece. The comic books have broken multiple records in Japan. Worldwide, One Piece is the best-selling manga series in history.
In addition to the exciting search for the One Piece, flashbacks reveal the backstories of the individual characters. Besides the childlike leader Monkey D. Luffy, the core crew includes the skilled swordsman Roronoa Zoro, the spirited Nami, the weapons expert Usopp, the kick-master Sanji, the human-reindeer Tony Tony Chopper, the archaeologist Nico Robin, the cyborg Franky, and the skeleton Brook.
Unlike most pirates, the Straw Hat Pirates do not kill their opponents. Eiichiro Oda explains this by saying that defeated opponents suffer the end of their dreams and convictions anyway through their defeat. Thus, some opponents can return later in the story (often with positive motives).

- In the American version, Sanji's cigarette was replaced with a lollipop.
- Luffy, Ace, and Garp suffer from narcolepsy.
- Nico Robin's appearance was inspired by Mia Wallace from Pulp Fiction. God Enel is based on Eminem.

Only the first person to bite into a Devil Fruit can benefit from it. After that, the fruit instantly turns into ordinary fruit. This ensures that there are never two people with the same ability.
- The series' intro describes the execution of Gol D. Roger, who, at the hour of his death, gives the public a clue about an unimaginably vast treasure. From that moment on, a new era of piracy begins.
